Free Word Tracking Spreadsheet
You’ve probably heard of the 10,000-hour rule: 10,000 hours of deliberate practice leads to expert performance.
If that’s the case, I’m well on my way!
Since I started focusing seriously on my writing a few years ago, I began tracking my time on projects, be it outlining, drafting, editing, proofreading, or writing a solid query letter and synopsis.
I thought I’d share the spreadsheet I use now for all my projects. You simply enter the date, the start and end times of your session, and optionally a small description. Then the spreadsheet calculates the time you worked on your project that day and overall time. As an added bonus, enter the number of words you wrote in one session and the spreadsheet also calculates your words per hour. Some conditional formatting makes it nice and readable as well.
